CHARACTERS WITH DISABILITIES IN BOOKS.
It’s important to have characters with disabilities in the books, but when it is written correctly, better not to write if it is to share wrong information. Disability is not the worst thing, but how people treat us, lack of accessibility or lack of representation in books and movies. Spoilers: It’s hard, I’m tired and I know others are too.
Search various websites! Better yet, those who have the stories of people who have what you want to write about. What happened? Why is your character like that? What’s the type of disability? Were they born with or without it? What accessibility do they have? How will the character deal with the disability? There are many ways to deal with this, not just the worst-case scenario “I hate myself and I want to die”. Remember this.
Also give personality to the character, in many times, they have no personality as if the disability is all they are.
If you know someone with a disability, even better! You receive the information directly, but also remember that one person’s experience doesn’t count for another, and I also say that for moments like “That person did it, so can you.” Don’t write it down in books, much less say it to someone else.
This is called “inspiration p0rn”, my teacher did it once. He sent me a video of a deaf girl who lived in the farm or something like that and had almost no internet, as if that would solve all my problems. Of course, believe me, I loved that. I ignored him.
But that doesn’t mean we’re obligated to answer all the questions and all the people. So have sense when asking someone about it.
